A telescopic handler, also called a lull or a reach forklift, is a piece of equipment widely used in the agriculture industry. It is somewhat like a forklift but has a telescopic cylinder, making it more like a crane than a forklift, with the increased versatility of a single telescopic boom that can reach upward and forward from the machine. The boom can be fitted with different attachments, such as a bucket or a winch.
In construction, the most widely used attachment for a lull is pallet forks and the most widely used application is to move material to and from places unreachable for a standard forklift. For example, telehandlers have the capability to remove palletized cargo from within a trailer and to place that product on to rooftops and other high locations. The latter use would otherwise require a crane, which is not always practical or time-efficient on a work site.
In agriculture the most widely used attachment for a telehandler is a bucket, again the most widely used application is to transport to and from places unobtainable for a 'conventional machine' which is typically is a wheeled loader or backhoe loader. For instance, lulls have the ability to extend directly into a high-sided trailer or hopper. The latter application would otherwise require a loading ramp, or something similar
