A telescopic handler, also called a lull or a zoom boom, is a piece of equipment often used in the agriculture industry. It is somewhat like a forklift but has a telescopic cylinder, making it more a crane than a forklift, with the increased versatility of a single telescopic boom that can reach upward and forward from the vehicle. The boom can be fitted with different attachments, such as pallet forks or a muck grab.
In construction, the most widely used attachment for a reach forklift is pallet forks and the most common application is to move loads from and to locations unreachable for a standard forklift. For example, telehandlers have the ability to remove palletized cargo from within a trailer and to place that material on to rooftops and other elevated locations. The latter application would otherwise require a crane, which is not always practical or time-efficient on a work site.
In the agricultural industry the most widely used attachment for a zoom boom is a bucket grab, again the most common application is to transport from and to unobtainable for a 'conventional machine' which in this case is a wheeled loader or backhoe loader. For example, reach forklifts have the ability to extend directly into a high-sided trailer or hopper. The latter application would otherwise require a loading ramp, or something similar
